Gagauzia's Relationship with the European Union
Although Gagauzia is part of the Republic of Moldova, which has an Association Agreement with the EU, the autonomous region has certain particularities in its relationship with the European Union.
Republic of Moldova – EU Association Agreement
In 2014, the Republic of Moldova signed an Association Agreement with the EU, which includes:
- Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) – elimination of trade barriers
- Political and security cooperation – alignment with European standards
- Sectoral cooperation – in key areas such as agriculture, energy, and transport
Gagauzia's Position
In the past, Gagauz authorities have expressed certain reservations about European integration, sometimes preferring closer ties with the Eurasian Customs Union. However, in recent years efforts have been made to involve Gagauzia more actively in Moldova’s European integration process.
